Why I Work

The Why

This is something I’ve run into and something I continually have to deal with. It’s not about if I should do the work or how much I should do. It’s about why I do it.

The reason is simple: for the Kingdom of God. Everything else is secondary.

I work to honor and glorify God. That truth sometimes gets lost on me, especially in a world that constantly measures success by money, status, experiences, or appearances. But my work, my photography, my business, my effort, is not about making ends meet, getting better gear, chasing experiences, or looking impressive. Those things may be side effects of good, faithful work, but they are not the goal.

The goal is honoring God and using my career as a way to bring His Kingdom to earth.

Photography is a gift, and I genuinely love it. But if God doesn’t bless it, none of it ultimately matters. That’s something I have to remind myself of often. I need to stay connected to why I do what I do, and every time I trace it back, it leads me to Christ.

When I work, it’s not so I can build myself up, it’s so I can help build the Kingdom. This perspective is something I need daily, because it’s incredibly easy to become selfish and self-serving without even realizing it. When I focus on what truly matters, it helps me work with excellence, serve people well, and stay grounded in purpose.

This is a reminder to myself as much as it is anything else: my work is worship. My career is a tool. And my success is measured not by recognition, but by faithfulness.
